County Road Maintenance
Most of the unpaved roads in Cedar Creek are maintained by Sandoval County. We ask that everyone obey the 20 mph speed limits in our community for safety reasons but also to prevent our unpaved roads from rapidly deteriorating. Rapid acceleration and sudden braking cause tires to slide or spin (loss of traction) and this creates washboard like conditions of our roads. Please slow down!
In order to request repair or maintenance to County Roads in Cedar Creek click on the link below to submit a request to Sandoval County.
You can also contact the Public Works Road Department by phone at 505-771-8500. Once you submit a request, it will be sent to the Road Department and a tracking number will be assigned to each request.

Wildfire Prevention
Tumbleweed Management
Controlling Living/Growing Tumbleweeds:
Manual Removal: Pull young plants by the central stem before they mature and create seeds.
Mowing: Regularly mow them when they are still small to prevent them from growing larger.
Chemical Control (Pre-emergent): Apply herbicides containing trifluralin or oryzalin in early spring (April–June) to stop seeds from germinating.
Chemical Control (Post-emergent): Use herbicides containing 2,4-D or dicamba on young, actively growing plants.
Natural Methods: Pour boiling water on them or spray them with vinegar mixed with Dawn (30-40% strength vinegar and enough Dawn to get it to adhere to plants).
Long-Term Prevention
Plant desirable vegetation to compete with young weeds.
Prevent them from going to seed, as one plant can produce up to 250,000 seeds.
Removal of Dead Plants (Tumbleweeds):
Volume Reduction: Smash or crush them down to make them easier to dispose of in regular trash.
Disposal: Take them to a designated transfer station or landfill.
Tools: Use a corded hedge trimmer to chop them up.
Mechanical Removal: Use a shovel or pitchfork to move them into bags.

US Forest Service Update
District Ranger Kenneth Born: Hazardous fuels reduction work (hand thinning, chipping, fuel wood collection) began in October in the NM-165/Las Huertas Canyon area southeast of Placitas, within two treatment units. The use of prescribed fire is NOT proposed in either treatment unit. Details about the treatment units can be found at https://www.fs.usda.gov/r03/cibola/projects/north-sandia-fuels-reduction-project.
District Ranger Born has been holding open office hours in Placitas the fourth Friday of each month, 10-2 at the San Antonio de las Huertas Land Grant building, 41B Camino de las Huertas. November's office hours could be affected if the government remains closed.

Home Owners Insurance Concerns
The attached link addresses the problems some New Mexicans have experienced in renewing property insurance due to the impact/potential of wildfires, and about a state plan called FAIR to help. Stats and statements in the news release are interesting — and troubling. At least five property owners in Placitas have had to change Insurance companies to secure a fire insurance policy.
